Job Summary:
The National Press Secretary oversees the day-to-day execution of DAGA’s earned media operations. This role serves as a key liaison to reporters, campaigns, Attorneys General (AGs), AG candidates, consultants, and internal stakeholders, ensuring consistent and effective communication across all channels.
The position is responsible for crafting and implementing timely, strategic responses to breaking news, with a focus on advancing and supporting the priorities of AGs and AG candidates. In close partnership with the Communications Director, the National Press Secretary also plays a central role in shaping external messaging, responding to emerging developments, and guiding the organization’s broader communications strategy across DAGA and its affiliated entities.

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Manage strategic outreach to national and local media, serving as the primary owner of press relationships and identify opportunities to elevate Attorneys General (AGs) and the organization.
- Partner with the Communications Director and cross-functional teams to advance strategic priorities and ensure coordinated execution of communications plans and departmental initiatives.
- Drive an ambitious earned media program, including pitching stories, responding to press inquiries, securing media placements for AGs, candidates, and producing supporting materials as needed.
- Collaborate with the President and Executive Director to identify, develop, and execute strategic press opportunities that elevate the organization and its leadership.
- Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for DAGA, while facilitating and overseeing media engagement for principals and senior staff.
- Cultivate and expand relationships with key members of the press to strengthen DAGA’s media presence and reach.
- Support the development of talking points, press guidance, and messaging materials for Attorneys General and DAGA staff.
- Oversee the timely compilation and distribution of press clips to internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the Communications Director to plan and execute media trainings for AGs, candidates, and executive leadership.
- Coordinate with Development, Policy, Political, and Research teams to produce materials for public or near-public distribution, ensuring message alignment and consistency across departments.
- Provide strategic guidance and support to AG communications teams as needed, particularly in navigating media engagement under varying circumstances.
Requirements
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- A bachelor's degree
- 4-6+ years of relevant communications experience
- Experience working with national and state reporters
- A working knowledge of public policy, federal and state government, and the judicial system
- Previous experience in political campaigns or political organization groups
- Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization from media partners to senior leadership
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong knowledge of earned media operations and familiarity with digital communications and content development
- Excellent judgment in the handling of sensitive political and communications
matters - Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced and stressful environment
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
- Flexibility which allows the candidate to adjust to changing priorities and operate effectively in a fluid and fast-paced environment

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $75,000 - $85,000, commensurate with experience.
