The purposes of the Des Moines Historical Society (DMHS) include the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about the history of the greater Des Moines area of Southern King County, State of Washington. The Des Moines Historical Society is incorporated as a not-for-profit Washington state corporation and is a recognized charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.

Des Moines is a mostly residential community that it situated along Puget Sound midway between Seattle and Tacoma in Washington state. The population as of July 1, 2022, was 32,408 and was the 39th largest city in the state. Des Moines is a long and narrow city, 6.3 miles long and 2.1 wide covering 4,340 acres.

Major employers in Des Moines are Highline School District, Highline College, City of Des Moines, Federal Aviation Administration's Northwest Mountain Headquarters and two retirement communities - Wesley and Judson Park. The DMHS is located a few blocks from the Des Moines Small Boat Marina offering wet and dry moorage for 840 recreational vessels.

Company History

The Des Moines Historical Society (DMHS) was founded on September 20, 1978 in Des Moines, Washington. Since the early 1980s it established a museum on the 2nd floor of the historic Odd Fellows Hall built in 1909. During the American Revolution Bicentennial, a DMHS member published local historical stories that helped Des Moines, Washington become a Bicentennial City. In 1989, the DMHS resources helped with the creation of the book "One Hundred Years of the 'Waterland' Community : A History of Des Moines, Washington" (ISBN 9780962174803).
