Description
The Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA), in partnership with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) and the Oklahoma Media Center (OMC), is extending the Indigenous Student Investigative Journalism Workshop application deadline to Jan. 30, 2026.
The workshop is a new training opportunity for Indigenous students interested in strengthening their investigative and data journalism skills. The day-and-a-half workshop will take place Feb. 12–13, 2026, in Oklahoma City. Participants will gain hands-on experience in investigative techniques, data analysis and storytelling, while connecting with working journalists and mentors in the field.
A limited number of fellowships is available to support student participation. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and the deadline is Jan. 30 or until funding runs out, whichever comes first.
The MacArthur Foundation has generously provided support for student fellowships.
This program is open to:
Indigenous students enrolled at any higher education institution in the United States
Students of all backgrounds attending Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions (ANNHs) and Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTIs)

Indigenous Student Investigative Journalism Workshop Fellowship Application
IRE is proud to partner with Indigenous Journalists Association and Oklahoma Media Center to host a day-and-a-half long workshop Feb. 12-13, 2026 in Oklahoma City.
This event is specifically designed to support Indigenous students in the U.S. at any higher education institution and students of all backgrounds attending Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs), Alaska Native- and Native Hawaiian-Serving Institutions (ANNHs) and Native American-Serving Nontribal Institutions (NASNTIs) nationwide.
Students will learn a variety of investigative skills including techniques to conduct investigative interviews, how to access public information, and tapping into the power of data and AI.
The event will take place at the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits.
Fellowship details:
The fellowship includes complimentary event registration, one-year IRE membership/renewal and a travel stipend.
The deadline to apply is Friday, January 30th (11:59 p.m. CT), but please note, applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis until the deadline or when funding runs out. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible as fellowships will be awarded on a rolling basis.
