Position Title: Historical Research & Programs Intern
Location: Chik-Wauk Museum & Nature Center, Gunflint Trail, Minnesota (50 miles from Grand Marais, MN)
Position Type: Part-Time and Fulltime/ Seasonal Internships
Application Deadline: January 20, 2026
Internship Dates: Flexible/Summer 2026-Operating Season is May through October
Stipend: Two Month Internships pay a stipend of $2000 and provide free housing
Position Overview
The Historical Research & Programs Intern supports museum operations, archival projects, and public engagement activities. This internship offers hands-on experience in museum studies, public history, environmental interpretation, and nonprofit operations. Interns will work closely with museum staff, volunteers, and visitors in a unique Northwoods setting.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist with cataloging, digitizing, and organizing archival materials and artifacts
- Help develop and deliver educational programs, tours, and interpretive materials
- Conduct research on regional history topics for exhibits, publications, or online resources
- Support daily museum operations, including visitor services and retail assistance
- Contribute to special events, historical presentations, and community outreach
- Assist with nature center activities related to wildlife, ecology, and trail interpretation
- Undertaking additional projects based on intern interests and organizational needs
Requirements
Qualifications
- Interest in history, anthropology, environmental studies, museum studies, or related fields
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Comfortable interacting with visitors of all ages
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Willingness to learn and adapt to a dynamic museum environment
- Ability to live and work in a remote Northwoods setting (housing is provided in a modern three-bedroom shared home)
- Having your own transportation is important. The museum is 60 miles from the nearest town.
- Preferred Skills (Not Required)
Experience with archival or collections software
- Research or writing experience
- Public speaking or teaching background
- Knowledge of Northwoods ecology or regional history
