The Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC) is seeking a full-time Executive Director.
Mission
The Midwest Art Conservation Center is a non-profit organization for the preservation and conservation of art and artifacts, providing treatment, education, and training for museums, historical societies, libraries, other cultural institutions, artists, and the public.
The Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works govern the methodology and standards behind all elements of MACC’s treatments and programming. At the core of this code is an informed respect for the cultural property, its unique character and significance, and the legacies of the people or person who created it.
Organization Overview
Established in 1977, MACC is an independent, non-profit center providing comprehensive services in Paintings, Objects, Paper, Textiles, and Preventive Conservation. The highly skilled, professional staff is collaborative, very collegial, and works innovatively with the curatorial and collection professionals at hundreds of non-profit organizations each year, including fine art museums, historical societies, universities, cultural centers, tribal entities, religious institutions, governments, libraries, archives, and the public. MACC is located within the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Position Summary
As the current Executive Director retires, MACC seeks a new, dynamic, visionary, and fiscally responsible Executive Director with familiarity in museum best practices and risk management to lead this successful organization into the future. The Executive Director works with the staff and Board of Directors to bring together plans and ideas that enhance the organization’s work and ensure its continued presence in the nation as a premier center for the treatment of art and artifacts, and collections care education. With a growing clientele, the Executive Director and department heads will lead a physical expansion as it approaches its 50th Anniversary in 2027.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Provide organizational leadership for all activities, and represent the organization at local, regional, and national levels.
Propose strategic plans and budgets to the Board of Directors and ensure all orders and resolutions of the Board of Directors are carried out.
Administer operations, implement budgets, execute strategic plans, maintain risk controls, set policies, and establish administrative procedures.
Ensure fiscal management of the organization, including supervision of all accounting and reporting functions, as well as cash flow management and government reporting.
Oversee grants, contracts, and earned revenue conservation services.
Drive revenue through grants and ongoing fundraising with foundations, federal and state agencies, individuals and corporations.
Prepare and present programming and financial reports to the Board of Directors, its committees, funders, governmental agencies, and the public-at-large, as required and needed.
Support and collaborate with the highly skilled staff, recognizing their work, ethics, needs and methodologies, and fostering the positive workplace culture.
Manage personnel by administering and upholding policies, conducting administrative and performance reviews.
Guide marketing efforts and provide institutional advancement wherever appropriate.
Assign responsibilities and carry out administrative duties when positions are in need.
Serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors and all committees.
The ideal candidate will have previous, successful, non-profit, executive leadership experience, a strong interest in art conservation and the preservation of cultural heritage, familiarity with museum standards and risk management, and the ability to work collaboratively with professionals and community members from a range of backgrounds. The position is open to those with legal eligibility to work in the US and will require a valid driver’s license and background check.
The position’s starting annual salary is $110,000 – $140,000, depending on experience and skills, and includes generous benefits including employer paid medical, dental, 403B contributions, vacation and sick time, professional development, and assistance in relocation expenses.
