- Executive Director - Senior Counsel

Mercy Health, an $11 billion Catholic health system and one of the 15th largest U.S. health systems, is seeking multiple highly skilled attorneys to join our dynamic in-house legal team. This is an opportunity to work with a leading integrated health system at the forefront of care innovation and support enterprise-wide initiatives across hospitals, clinics, physician organizations, and digital health platforms. Ideal candidates are strategic, collaborative, and comfortable navigating complex healthcare, regulatory, corporate, and operational environments. We are open to onsite, hybrid, or remote arrangements with location options at our home office in Chesterfield, Missouri or at our growing and dynamic Northwest Arkansas or Oklahoma City ministry locations.
Key Legal Competencies (Candidates may have expertise in one or more areas):
- Commercial Contracting: Drafts, negotiates, and structures complex agreements, including technology, vendor, services, consulting, and strategic partnerships, while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations.
- Regulatory & Corporate: Advises on healthcare regulatory compliance, nonprofit and corporate governance, entity management, board and committee approvals, and strategic affiliations. Expertise in Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, HIPAA, and other federal and state healthcare regulations with experience supporting regulatory aspects of affiliations, joint ventures, physician alignment models, and other strategic transactions within integrated delivery systems.
- Employment & Litigation: Provides guidance on employment law, workforce policies, and employee relations; manages employment-related claims and non-malpractice litigation; coordinates litigation strategy, outside counsel, and insurance coverage.
- Healthcare Operations & Medical Staff: Supports medical staff governance, credentialing, privileging, peer review, hospital and clinic regulatory oversight, front-line patient care issues, and privacy/data protection compliance.
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Works closely with clinical, operational, finance, compliance, and executive leaders to integrate legal guidance into business strategy, care delivery models, and system-wide initiatives and collaborates with a high-performing, cross-functional legal team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advise executive and operational leaders on legal matters.
- Support legal review and risk mitigation impacts of healthcare transactions and litigation.
- Supervise junior attorneys, law clerks, and outside counsel.
- Advise internal committees, boards, and task forces.
- Monitor and interpret evolving laws and regulations.
- Support strategic organizational projects and initiatives.
Leadership/Supervision:
- Mentors junior attorneys; oversees outside counsel; promotes knowledge sharing.

Requirements
- JD required with health law certification, healthcare compliance certification, dual degree JD/MHA or JD/MPH preferred
Bar membership - 7+ years of legal experience in one or more of the following functional areas: healthcare regulatory compliance, corporate governance, healthcare transactions, physician arrangements, hospital operations, clinical and medical staff matters, healthcare risk management, managed care contracting, employment law, tax and tax-exemption, antitrust, mergers and acquisitions, litigation management, real estate and construction, insurance and risk programs, and healthcare reform and reimbursement.
